Finally I had the opportunity to try out this jacket in its proper environment, ie Scottish winter. Three days of wind, rain, hail, sleet and snow at various times and for long periods, including blizzard conditions and -8c wind chill. Also had some high abrasion moments when scrambling over mixed ground. In brief, the jacket was faultless. I rarely needed more than the jacket and a winter base layer, and when I did need more, a Montane gridded fleece sufficed.
To the detail. The weight is brilliant & does not comprise the jacket’s ability to cope with harsh winter conditions. The sleeve cuffs easily pull over thick winter gloves & synch down securely and comfortably. The hood is a great fit (and particularly well-fitting over a helmet). The length of the jacket at the chin keeps out the elements and likewise at the hem to allow you to put on crampons without it riding up over your hips. The sleeves stayed put when reaching up for holds. Pit zips work easily and were a boon when working hard in ascent. I couldn’t fault the jacket & after almost 9 hours yesterday in full winter conditions my base layer was totally dry.
One point worth mentioning is the 3 outer pockets are not watertight (& not claimed to be) so be aware when stowing items on very wet days.
Overall I give it the 5 stars it richly deserves. I purchased mine through Montane’s excellent Professionals deal - a big benefit of being a member of my professional association, making the value unmatchable.
